Popular routes for cross-country skiing enthusiasts

This year's winter has pleasantly surprised us all with a bountiful supply of snow. If you are a cross-country skiing enthusiast, you will surely enjoy this weather and are already thinking about where you would like to go during the next weekend. We've put together a little overview of where to travel for some quality cross-country skiing.

High Tatras

Slovak leader in hiking, skiing and of course, also in cross-country skiing. The current winter season and restrictions do not favour skiers, but cross-country skiers can enjoy the High Tatras several times. Whether you head to Stary Smokovec, the surroundings of Strbske Pleso or dock in Tatranská Lomnica, this region boasts some of the most beautiful trails. According to the information on the website, the trails are officially closed, but cross-country skiers do the sport on their own responsibility.

Orava

What would winter sport be without Orava? The location in the north of Slovakia allows the snow in Orava to last a little longer than in other parts of Slovakia. Again, there are many options to choose from. It is worth mentioning the routes around Dolný Kubín, and the well-known Kubínska Hoľa with shorter, 5 km long route is also worth mentioning. A short distance from the Polish border you will find the village of Zuberec, where more than 20 kilometres of cross-country skiing trails are available to cross-country skiers.

Skalka Kremnica

In the heart of central Slovakia lie the Kremnické vrchy mountains, home to the Skalka ski resort. There are several cross-country skiing circuits here, beginners on the shorter circuits as well as master cross-country skiers on the North Circuit will come into their own. The weather here is just below freezing, so don't forget your winter gear.

Malé Karpaty

Just a few dozen kilometres from the capital, cross-country skiing enthusiasts can try the trails at Pezinska Baba or Zochova Chata. There are several short trails, but also a longer one, leading up to the Bratislava Kamzík. The nature of the Little Carpathians is magical and you will have a lot to look at during your visit.

If you go cross-country skiing this year, remember that not only do you need to protect yourself from the cold, but you should also have adequate protection for your mouth and nose. Wearing a balaclava when playing sports is rather impractical and uncomfortable, so try our neckwear, which you can adjust as needed. Thermal underwear, quality socks or a waterproof top layer are already a given when you're out in the winter outdoors.
